Not exactly what one would call a flurry of activity here, right?<br />
<br />
In the past year, my life has been very busy with major milestones (got engaged, bought my old company back, sold my house in the Virgin Islands, etc) and I simply haven't had time to update this blog. Make no mistake, I've definitely had time for <i>photography</i>, and have been busy making art all year long. In addition, my <a href="https://www.facebook.com/FineImagePhotography" target="_blank">Facebook Page</a> gets a lot more attention these days, so, when I do have something to say, I tend to say it there.<br />
<br />
So, what does this mean for the future of the blog? To be honest, I'm not sure. Creating quality blog posts takes loads of time -- and time is hard to come by these days. For now, I'm putting the blog on hold. I'm not deleting it as I may start posting to it regularly again in the future. Just freezing it in time for now. If you want to see my latest work, my <a href="http://korylidstrom.smugmug.com/" target="_blank">website</a> and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/FineImagePhotography" target="_blank">Facebook Page</a> are the ticket!<br />
<br />
Before I go, I'm going to leave you with an image of my fiance and I so you can see for yourself who has been taking up lots of my time this past year. Not bad, eh? :)<br />

Sometimes in life you come across people who are special. People who have an aura about them. You know the type: they always command attention when they enter a room, always look fantastic, are successful and always have lots of friends and things going on.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Back in high school, I knew this guy Eric. My friends and I called him the Golden Boy. He had natural good looks, perfect grades, the attention of throngs of girls, and always did well at <i>anything</i> he tried. It would've been downright annoying if he wasn't such a nice, cool guy. But he was. The awesome times I had with him are too numerous to count.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A few months ago, I was at a friend's birthday party when I ran into another Special Person. She had a small, unintentional entourage around her. I say unintentional because I could tell she hadn't arranged for it to be that way, it just <i><b>was</b></i> that way. The way she looked and carried herself made me stop and stare -- beauty and confidence command anyone's attention.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Eventually, after what seemed like a fortnight, she and I got around to chatting. I learned the following things about her, in order of importance: 1. She's not single. (Dammit.) 2. Her name is Tawnya Konobeck. 3. She performs all over the US as an incredible burlesque dancer named <a href="http://www.thesweetpea.com/" target="_blank">Sweetpea</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A few days later, we connected via Facebook and I learned that <a href="https://www.facebook.com/SweetpeaBurlesque/photos_stream" target="_blank">she works with a lot of photographers and is very photogenic</a>. I told her that if she ever wanted to work together, I'd be game. She replied in the affirmative and invited me to an event she was hosting later that week. I went with a friend and we were both BLOWN AWAY.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Seriously, I knew she would be good, but she was <i>beyond</i> good. It was a Saturday night show at a popular club in downtown Minneapolis and the place was packed. When she took the stage, my friend and I exchanged astonished looks. "<i><b>That's</b> the gal you were telling me about?</i>" my friend asked. All I could do is nod and grin.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next day, I wrote her again and pretty much demanded that we shoot together, and soon. After seeing her on stage, I just <i>knew</i> we could make some very strong images. Long story short: she agreed and we did.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Below are some images from our first couple of shoots. We have more shoots planned, so check my <a href="https://www.facebook.com/FineImagePhotography" target="_blank">Facebook page</a> for updates. And, if you haven't LIKED <a href="https://www.facebook.com/FineImagePhotography" target="_blank">my FB page</a> or <a href="https://www.facebook.com/SweetpeaBurlesque" target="_blank">Sweetpea's FB page</a> yet, please do! Every little bit helps. ^_^</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
P.S. Yes, I still have lots of good ol' nature images coming down the pipeline. I'll be shooting in the southwest US the entire month of November with my good friend and world renowned landscape photographer <a href="http://www.marcadamus.com/content.php?page=bio" target="_blank">Marc Adamus</a>. Stay tuned and take care.</div>

As a kid growing up in southern Minnesota, I had two things in abundance: close proximity to the woods and a vivid imagination. I took advantage of both.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made forts to protect me from the bad guys that I just <i>knew</i> were out there, searching for me with nefarious intentions. I climbed trees to survey the land in case anyone was in distress and needed the assistance of a skinny, nine-year-old, self-proclaimed Master Of The Woods. I skipped rocks on the river, practicing up for that big rock-skipping-contest that I was certain would happen <i>any day now</i> in the ravine behind my house. Sometimes, things got heated and I had no choice but to take matters into my own hands, shooting the bad guys -- who bore an <i>uncanny</i> resemblance to glass bottles -- with my slingshot, grinning ear to ear when the bad guys smashed nicely into little pieces. And, it goes without saying that I regularly searched for and found hidden treasures scattered throughout the woods.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This, of course, should not come as a surprise. Any self-respecting kid simply <i>knows</i> that there is treasure in the woods. It's just a matter of finding it. Which, for me at least, was always an adrenaline rush because the treasure was actually <i>real</i>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Every spring, my family would grab some pillow cases, hit the woods and hunt for marvelous <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morchella" target="_blank">Morel mushrooms</a>. Morels are an easily identifiable, edible delight that can be found in the woods across the entire Midwest, New England and parts of the South. Fried in butter, they are a tasty treat indeed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Even better than the eating was the finding. There's just something about tromping through the woods, knowing that just around the bend <i>might</i> be a treasure trove of goodies waiting to be found. Or not. Sometimes, we'd spend an entire day scouring the countryside and not find a thing. Other days, it seemed we'd see Morels everywhere we looked. Regardless, it was the thrill of the hunt that kept us coming back. Much like how a slot machine keeps you playing with the promise that the next pull might be the jackpot, the woods keeps you hunting for that next delicious score.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Just over a week ago, for the first time in over twenty years, I decided to fuel my addiction once more and entered the woods just outside my hometown of Mankato, Minnesota. This time, I had a Morel beginner with me and I really wanted a successful hunt so that she would understand what all the fuss was about. Literally within three minutes we struck gold. There, like a diamond in the rough, was a cluster of three Morels poking through the leaves. After that, we found them everywhere. For the next hour, we weren't treasure hunters, we were treasure <i>finders</i>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And another Morel mushroom lover was born. ^_^</div>

During <a href="http://fineimagephotography.blogspot.com/2012/10/time-to-get-leid.html" target="_blank">my stay at Kalani</a> as the Artist-In-Residence, one of the things they assigned me with was making images of people doing yoga. <a href="https://www.kalani.com/" target="_blank">Kalani</a> is renowned for their yoga, both for their many excellent instructors and for the wide variety of yoga styles that they teach. As such, they wanted dynamic image of people practicing the craft.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While scouting, I found an area on the coast where the waves regularly slammed <i>hard</i> into the rocks, shooting high into the air. The power of it was astounding! Thinking that it would be a perfect spot to bond with nature and practice yoga, I set about creating an image of someone practicing yoga with the thundering waves as a backdrop. After many days conceptualizing and then shooting, I came away with some images I love.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Below are a couple images from the yoga shoots. The first one was shot in the afternoon, and the next one was shot at sunrise the very next morning. As you can see, the wind completely died during the night allowing for a perfectly still tidepool complete with reflections. The end result are two images with similar concepts, but very different outcomes. I want to give a shout out to my friend Lynn for posing for these shots for me. She was very patient and resilient -- standing still for hours while being pummeled by high winds and waves is not easy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I will have more images from the trip posted soon. Until then, take care!</div>

Aloha! After an incredible month, my time here in Hawaii is coming to an end. To say I've gotten some great shots here would be an understatement. This has been one of the most productive trips I've ever had, both professionally and personally.</div>

Next month, once I've had time to edit them, I will have more images from the trip to show you. For now, I have a little teaser image for you. It's an image from my first lava shoot. Witnessing the ocean and lava battle it out was awe-inspiring. It truly was.</div>

Or under the couch cushions? A hidden treasure you did not expect! Awesome, right? I know the feeling.<br />
<br />
Earlier today, in preparation for my <a href="http://fineimagephotography.blogspot.com/2012/10/time-to-get-leid.html" target="_blank">trip to Hawaii</a> tomorrow, I went through some of my decade-old Hawaiian images and found a couple keepers that I hadn't noticed before. I'll call them my Images From Under The Couch.<br />
<br />
As I'm quite busy today, I'm going to keep this photoblog post short. Suffice it to say that next month, I should have a bounty of tropical images for you to get you through the rest of the winter. Until then, take care. And keep warm! ^_^<br />

Happy New Year from the Caribbean!</div>
<div class="separator">

<div class="separator">
I sure as hell hope that 2013 goes a lot better for me than 2012 is ending. I've recently come down with <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0002350/" target="_blank">Dengue Fever</a>, a mosquito-borne illness that's sort of like the flu on steroids. I'm not a doctor, but my personal opinion of this tropical malady is this: IT SUCKS ASS. On top of the physical symptoms, the psychological horror of being cooped up while it's beautiful outside is a veritable hell. Ugh.</div>
<div class="separator">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator">
Venting aside, I do actually have some new photographic sweetness to demonstrate. Last month, I entered the prestigious <a href="http://www.naturesbestphotography.com/contest2/closed.php?cid=127" target="_blank">Ocean Views Photo Contest</a>. It's an annual contest focusing on all things ocean related, from wildlife, to weather, to recreation. I entered almost 50 images, many of which you've seen here before. There were, however, some images from the Caribbean I entered that have never seen the "light of day" here, so I thought I'd share them with you. None of them have titles, but I wrote a small description below each.</div>
<div class="separator">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator">
That does it for this entry and for 2012 as a whole. As always, thanks for your continued readership. Wish me luck in the contest. And Happy New Year!</div>

Like death and taxes, one thing you can always count on is that both the canyon country of Utah and the mountain country of Colorado will always show you a damn good time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We had some extra adventure thrown in this go-around, courtesy of Mother Nature. A rare and powerful thunderstorm pummeled Canyonlands National Park on our third day, complete with tarp-tearing winds, drenching downpours and hail aplenty. Ironically, the storm day ended up being the favorite day of the trip for most of our nine-man expedition, myself included. The weather brought with it stunning clouds and good light.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On our very last day, we got one last smack by the weather gods, as the road out of the canyon was completely washed away and unpassable for cars. All the bikers went on ahead, but for myself and the other truck driver (we had two SAG vehicles to carry the group's gear), it meant turning around and retracing 100+ tough, 4X4 miles back to where we had entered the park days earlier. It was a grim prospect, because we didn't have enough fuel and the daylight was at a premium. No way did we want to be stuck on the treacherous canyon roads after dark. We only had about six hours of light left, and the ranger at the roadblock said it'd take at least seven hours to drive out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I drove it in four and a half.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Yep, the desire not to be stranded in the wilderness alone was, shall we say, a powerful motivator. I put the pedal to the metal, bought gas along the way from another camp, and was back in Moab with time to spare. I met with the rest of the group and we all went out for a fun Saturday night on the town. The other driver? He didn't have my... enthusiasm, and ended up stranded in the wilderness for one more night before finally returning to civilization the next day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm still not completely sure if he wasn't the smartest one of us all.</div>

I think that's a bunch of crap. I say everyone deserves a <i>fourth</i> chance... at least that's what I keep telling myself lately. How else can I explain my good fortune at landing a fourth trip to Hawaii?<br />
<br />
That's right: this winter, after a five-year hiatus, I'll be packing up my lenses and returning to the Big Island of Hawaii. Like before, I'll be exploring every corner of this magnificent island in search of beautiful images. Only this time, I will have an additional role to play.<br />
<br />
I'm proud to announce that, after a lengthy application process, I have been selected to be the Artist-In-Residence for the month of February at the renowned <a href="http://www.kalani.com/" target="_blank">Kalani Oceanside Retreat</a> on Hawaii.<br />
<br />
Kalani is like nothing I've ever heard of before. It's a combination retreat/sanctuary/wellness-center located in the remote Puna region of Hawaii. Situated on a lush, 100+ acre plot, Kalani is a place for people to come and unwind, recharge, connect with nature and leave the hectic pace of the modern world behind. <br />
<br />
But, Kalani is much more than just a retreat. It's a non-profit, thriving eco-village that practices sustainable agriculture and places great importance on concepts of family and community. You can stay there as a paying guest, or you can volunteer there for months at a time, joining over 100 others in helping out with the many different things needed to make Kalani run smoothly.<br />
<br />
Or, if you're lucky like me, you can be the monthly Artist-In-Residence (AIR). As AIR, my primary job is to use my photographic skills to make a beneficial contribution to the Kalani community. As such, I have been charged with creating works of art for use both on Kalani's website and throughout the property. I will also be teaching photography classes both in the field and in the classroom.<br />
<br />
In exchange, I will be given room and board in a special VIP section of the compound with free access to healthy, chef-prepared meals and world-class facilities. There's even a large clothing-optional pool. (You know, in case your swimsuit gets too, um, constricting.)<br />
<br />
Of course, the best part will be the community and island itself. Living and working in one of the most amazing places on Earth meeting friendly folks from all around the world isn't exactly the worst way I could think of to spend my time.<br />
<br />
In celebration, I have posted some of my favorite Hawaii images from the past below. Hawaii has always been very good to me, and I have no doubt that this time that trend will continue. I can not WAIT to get back out there!<br />
<br />
That about does it for this month. Next time, I will have the images from my recent trip to Utah and Colorado. Until then, thanks for reading as always. And Happy Halloween! ^_^<br />

BOO!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With tomorrow being the first day of October and the start of the Halloween season, the time feels right to unveil this spooky, ominous image. (Be sure to view the <a href="http://www.fineimagephotography.com/Fine-Art-Galleries/Animals/2715385_S4nffc#!i=2121041508&k=5hS7Dwr&lb=1&s=A" target="_blank">large version</a>.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I shot this from my canoe while paddling the Minnesota River earlier this summer. It's a bald eagle, quietly surveying his domain. He stayed there motionless for quite awhile, all alone at the top of a tall dead tree. I got the feeling that nothing escaped his steely gaze. I wouldn't want to be a mouse or rabbit living around there, that's for damn sure.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That about does it for this month's unusually brief (some would say mercifully so) entry. Next month, I will have images from my upcoming trip to Colorado and Utah, which is only six days away.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Until then, take care. And, don't even <i>think</i> about wearing the same costume as last year. ^_^</div>

As promised in <a href="http://fineimagephotography.blogspot.com/2012/07/a-butterfly-bonanza.html" target="_blank">last month's photoblog post</a>, here are the images from the photo shoot in the tall grass prairie. I don't often do this type of work, but, when good friends honor you by asking you to shoot their engagement photos for them, you don't say no.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The prairie, of course, cooperated perfectly and really lent a sense of beauty and atmosphere to the images. We had a blast the whole time despite the hordes of mosquitoes. A colorful sunset sealed the deal.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To mix it up, we also did some shooting on the Stone Arch Bridge in downtown Minneapolis. My friends are city kids, after all.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To Gen and Jake: thanks for being great subjects and even better friends. I look forward to shooting your 50th Anniversary photos in 2062. Until then! ^_^</div>

Ever heard that saying "<i>even the sun shines on a dog's ass some days</i>"? It basically means that everyone gets lucky sometimes. Well, pass the sunscreen, because lately my butt's been getting severely burned.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
Last week, I returned to a beautiful native tall grass prairie near Minneapolis (the very same one where I made <a href="http://www.fineimagephotography.com/Fine-Art-Galleries/Twig-The-Fairy/13111791_hqgSwX#!i=950812922&k=vxFEc&lb=1&s=A" target="_blank">this</a> image, <a href="http://www.fineimagephotography.com/Fine-Art-Galleries/Twig-The-Fairy/13111791_hqgSwX#!i=981422384&k=nZa5o&lb=1&s=A" target="_blank">this</a> image and <a href="http://fineimagephotography.blogspot.com/2011/07/flower-power.html" target="_blank">this</a>, too) to check on the wildflowers for an upcoming photo shoot. <i>Every single time</i> I've been there, Lady Luck has been sitting in my lap and I've been blessed with perfect conditions. This time was no different.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The moment I saw it, I could scarcely contain my smile. The sky was a vibrant blue with nice, fluffy clouds and the wildflowers were the best I'd ever seen them! Even though I was only there to scout locations and hadn't planned on shooting, I knew immediately that plans had changed. It was time to make some art!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I found the composition I wanted, set up my camera, and waited. The place was swarming with Monarch butterflies and I knew if I was patient enough, I'd eventually get a bunch of them in my composition.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Sure enough, one by one the Monarchs swooped in. Each time, I snapped a shot. Then, in post production, I blended the shots together to create the image you see below, which I am very happy with. It really captures the fun, exuberant, summery emotion I felt out there. Seems like I can do no wrong on the prairie. (Other places are a different story.)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And that photo shoot? It happened just a few days ago, and, of course, Mother Nature cooperated beautifully and things went well. I'll have those images posted soon. Until then, thanks as always and take care. And enjoy summer while it lasts! ^_^</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<i>(P.S. There are 12 Monarch butterflies in the image. Can you find 'em all?)</i><br />

My next-door neighbor must be on cloud nine. Wouldn't you be if a pot of gold materialized in <i>your</i> back yard?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A couple weeks ago, at the end of a stormy day, the most magnificent rainbow I've ever seen appeared right over my house in northeast Minneapolis (my house is the second one from the left). It was a rare sight, indeed. The fact that you could see the whole thing from end to end -- <i>in the middle of the city</i> -- was almost unheard of. Combine that with the vivid colors of the setting sun and the result was truly something to behold. For the short time it lasted, I was hypnotized by its beauty.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As for that pot of gold? I dunno if that legend is true or not, but I will say that my neighbor has been sporting some new bling lately. Coincidence? ^_^<br />

(Yes, big surprise, I know.)<br />
<br />
For the first time ever, I can not identify a butterfly. Over the years, <a href="http://www.fineimagephotography.com/Fine-Art-Galleries/Butterflies/3771615_Qkh8FJ#!i=588364396&k=xsNHJ" target="_blank">I've shot many, many butterflies</a>, and I've always been able to successfully identify each and every one.<br />
<br />
Not this time.<br />
<br />
This cute lil' bugger has completely eluded me. From my extensive research, I've concluded that he is a moth, not a butterfly, but that's about as far as I've been able to get, and even that's not for certain. I've exhausted every lead I have. Therefore, from this day forth, he shall be known as The Moth With No Name (cue epic music).<br />
<br />
That does it for this month. Next time, I should have some new summertime images for you. And none of them will contain unnamed species. Until then, take care. ^_^<br />

When was the last time someone sent you a postcard? You know: those cards with an image on one side and a space on the other where you use a writing utensil to, um, <i>write</i> a note --<i> with your hands.</i> Not with a keyboard, keypad, touchscreen or anything of the sort. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you're like most folks in this ultra-digital age, it's probably been quite awhile. Well, fear not, because I have a whole mess of postcards for you.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ok, I admit, these aren't true, paper postcards. But, they're postcards nonetheless. In the world of photography, we often call images that are good but not great "snapshots" or "postcards". These are images that are often shot spontaneously without the normal amount of scouting and pre-visualization that goes into "<a href="http://fineimagephotography.blogspot.com/2011/10/holding-out-for-hero.html" target="_blank">hero images</a>". They are still good images, but not necessarily the cream of the crop.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Such is the case with the images below. These are a collection of "postcards" I made throughout last winter from St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands. I don't consider them quite up to par with the images on my main website, but still nice enough to show you.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

To shoot in, that is.</div><div style="font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; "><br /></div><div style="font-weight: normal; ">Ask just about any landscape photographer, and they'll tell you the same thing. Finding good compositions among the dense forest is just plain <i>tough</i>. (I touched on this in <a target="_blank" href="http://fineimagephotography.blogspot.com/2009/11/three-for-road.html" style="font-style: normal; ">a previous photoblog post</a> when I was shooting in the Hoh Rainforest in Olympic National Park.)</div><div style="font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; "><br /></div><div style="font-weight: normal; ">The rainforest of St. Croix is certainly no exception. <span style="font-style: normal; font-size: 100%; ">I've spent years trudging through many different parts of it, and never have found a composition I liked.</span><span style="font-size: 100%; "> Being in the Caribbean, it's a jumbled mass that often requires a machete to progress through. It reminds me of that famous line from <i>Predator</i> where Jesse Ventura says, "This sh*t makes Cambodia look like Kansas".</span></div><div style="font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; "><br /></div><div style="font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; ">But, that all changed recently when a good friend took me on a jungle excursion he often does for fun. I thought I'd seen it all, but he proved me wrong. (Something that's all too easy to do.)</div><div style="font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; "><br /></div><div style="font-weight: normal; "><span style="font-style: normal; ">I came across a tree that is quite honestly the most spiritual, majestic and </span><i>human</i> tree I've ever seen -- it literally had a <i>face</i>. It was straight outta <i>Lord of the Rings</i> -- Treebeard would've wept! The feeling it gave me can only be described as "humble". I can't wait to visit it again.</div><div style="font-weight: normal; "><br /></div><div style="font-weight: normal; ">I worked hard at creating the "feeling" of the tree's spirit in the image below -- I hope you can feel it, too. Rum is divine. Tourists are clueless. (Most of them, anyway.)</span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; font-style: normal; "><span><br /></span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span>Surprisingly, between the beach, bugs and booze, I've actually managed to learn a few <i>useful</i> things, too. Like how to sail a boat. Or, how to open a beer bottle -- <i>any</i> beer bottle (even the non-twist-off kind) -- with the flick of a lighter. Or, in the true survivalist spirit, how to hack open a coconut with a machete in a jiffy.</span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span><br /></span></div><div style="font-weight: normal; "><span><span><span style="font-size: 100%;">I've also filled my brain with a lot of <i>interesting</i> things: Columbus landed here on his second voyage in 1493. When the sun sets on a clear day, it often produces a </span></span><a target="_blank" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_flash" style="font-size: 100%; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; ">green flash</a><span><span style="font-size: 100%;">. Everyone should see <a target="_blank" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bioluminescence">bio-luminescence</a></span> at least once in their life. (It's mind-blowing!)</span></span></div><div style="font-weight: normal; "><span><span style="font-size: 100%;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="font-weight: normal; "><span><span style="font-size: 100%;">Then, of course, there's the <i>sad</i> stuff: Third-world poverty is no joke. Corrupt politicians can really screw things up. Hurricanes are forces to be reckoned with.</span></span></div><div style="font-weight: normal; "><span><span style="font-size: 100%;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="font-weight: normal; "><span><span style="font-size: 100%;">Along the lines of that last category, I have seen first hand what development can do to </span>indigenous<span style="font-size: 100%;"> wildlife. Before settlers arrived, the US Virgin Islands were home to a diverse population of tropical birds. Then, Europeans introduced the mongoose to the islands to eradicate rats. Big mistake. The mongooses, being day-hunters, largely ignored the nocturnal rats and instead feasted on the unprepared birds. Before long, the islands' once robust bird population was decimated. (Nice move, Europeans! Mongooses: 1. Settlers: 0.)</span></span></div><div style="font-weight: normal; "><span><span style="font-size: 100%;"><br /></span></span></div><div style="font-weight: normal; "><span><span><span style="font-size: 100%;">Due to our forefathers' blunder, it is a rare treat to be able to see an indigenous island bird species in the wild today. Enter the <a target="_blank" href="http://neotropical.birds.cornell.edu/portal/species/identification?p_p_spp=25022">Green-throated Carib</a>. For some reason, this pretty hummingbird has beaten the odds, and can be seen here and there around the islands. However, getting a good photo of one is no easy task. </span></span><span style="font-size: 100%; ">Being a hummingbird, the Green-throated Carib is </span><i style="font-size: 100%; ">extremely</i><span style="font-size: 100%; "> fast. We're talking lightening speed -- now you see it, now you don't. </span></span></div><div style="font-weight: normal; "><span style="font-size: 100%; "><br /></span></div><div style="font-weight: normal; "><span style="font-size: 100%; ">For years, I've fantasized about being able to photograph one of the little buggers in a way that's truly artistic. Not just a quick snapshot of one on a fence. Something truly pleasing to the eye.</span></div><div style="font-weight: normal; "><span style="font-size: 100%; "><br /></span></div><div style="font-weight: normal; "><span style="font-size: 100%; ">Last month, I finally got my wish.</span></div><div style="font-weight: normal; "><span style="font-size: 100%; "><br /></span></div><div style="font-weight: normal; "><span style="font-size: 100%; ">I was out shooting on Cottengarden Point, on the eastern tip of the island, when out of nowhere popped a Green-throated Carib. I watched him for awhile and noticed that he kept coming back to a specific flower on a certain cactus. The sun was starting to set and the light was golden and beautiful, so I decided to take a chance, set up my cumbersome long lens rig and train it right on the flower.</span></div><div style="font-weight: normal; "><span style="font-size: 100%; "><br /></span></div><div style="font-weight: normal; "><span style="font-size: 100%; ">I knew it was a long shot. What were the chances that the lil' guy would come back yet again to that specific flower? And, even if he <i>did</i>, how likely was I to manage to catch him when he was in just the right spot in the frame with his wings positioned correctly, et cetera?</span></div><div style="font-weight: normal; "><span style="font-size: 100%; "><br /></span></div><div style="font-weight: normal; "><span style="font-size: 100%; ">Well, maybe I should visit Vegas soon because I hit the jackpot! Within ten minutes, my little feathered friend returned right on cue. He lingered for about a minute and then he was gone and did not return. Didn't matter. I had what I came for. <i>My wish had been granted!</i></span></div><div style="font-weight: normal; "><span style="font-size: 100%; "><br /></span></div><div style="font-weight: normal; "><span>That about does it for this entry. Although, yes, I love her, too. (Whaddaya think I am?)</div><div><br /></div><div>No, I'm talking about <a target="_blank" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother_Advertising">Mother Advertising</a>, one of the trendiest, most well-respected advertising agencies in the world. They have offices in London, New York and Buenos Aires, and are the agency of record for some of the world's biggest brands including <i>Coca-Cola</i>, <i>Ikea</i>, <i>Stella Artois</i> and many others. They produce some of the most clever, catchiest and flat-out <i>best</i> ads in both print and television, including Superbowl commercials complete with celebrity appearances. In short: they are a big deal.</div><div><br /></div><div>So, you can imagine my elation when I landed a photography assignment for <a target="_blank" href="http://www.mothernewyork.com/">Mother New York</a> last November. I travelled to Phoenix, Arizona to shoot the Target GoTube in it's inaugural deployment. </div><div><br /></div><div>The GoTube is a genius idea courtesy of the brilliant creative minds at Mother New York. Basically, it's a mini-Target store that sells a limited number of items tailored specifically to the event at hand. In this case, the event was the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.azballoonclassic.com/">2011 Arizona Balloon Classic</a>. As such, the Go-Tube had things like binoculars, lawn chairs, neck pillows -- all things that one would need at a hot air balloon festival. Sweetening the deal was the fact that the items were at regular Target prices, as opposed to the normally high prices found at festivals these days. And, you could even return the items later to any Target store if needed. Pretty clever, indeed.</div><div><br /></div><div>For me, the best part of all was working with the Mother staff. They are at the top of their game and it was a genuine pleasure working with people who really know what they're doing. They were very happy with the work I did, and hinted at the possibility of future projects together. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.</div><div><br /></div><div>Be sure to check out the official announcement of the GoTube project on Mother New York's website by clicking <a target="_blank" href="http://www.mothernewyork.com/work/the-target-gotube/">RIGHT HERE</a>. (Because these images were shot on assignment, they are technically the property of Mother New York and thus can't be found in my website's Fine Art Galleries as per usual.)</div><div><br /></div><div>Well, that's all for this month. As always, thanks for reading. And give your mom a hug! ^_^</div><div><br /></div><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Q4wPLIXi4b8/TyWawDTISnI/AAAAAAAAAsI/LF8YSd-JUF8/s1600/Kory_20111118_1811Blog.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; Therefore, I'm going to keep this short. Celebration and champagne beckons, and I never keep a good bubbly waiting.</div><div><br /></div><div>My trip to Canada was as awesome as it was cold. And, since it was double-digits below zero, I shouldn't have to tell you that I had one hell of a good time up there. The pristine beauty of world-class <a target="_blank" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banff_National_Park">Banff National Park</a> in the midst of a frigid winter wonderland was truly something to behold. The cherry on top was the complete and utter lack of crowds. We had the whole place to ourselves! Well, except for the herd of Big Horn Sheep that insisted on licking the salt off of my car, but they were adorable and never once asked me what kind of camera I use.</div><div><br /></div><div>We camped several nights right next to a shelter that had a wood stove in it. When the day's work was done, we filled that sucker full of wood, got a blazing fire going, and had a great time sipping whiskey and gazing up at the stars, as you can see in the photo below. About fifty yards away from the shelter was a bathroom that was actually <i>open and functional</i>. In the middle of nowhere. In the middle of winter. In the middle of the night. Only in Canada.</div><div><br /></div><div>Toward the end of the trip, Marc and I had the honor of meeting famed Canadian photographer <a target="_blank" href="http://www.phototravelreview.com/an-interview-with-darwin-wiggett-2/">Darwin Wiggett</a>. Like just about every other landscape photographer in existence, I've been a fan of Darwin's work for many years, so finally getting to meet him was a real thrill. Accompanying him was his soulmate and fellow photographer <a target="_blank" href="http://chrysalizz.smugmug.com/Other/About-Me/2653642_iLsYZ#127858806_HPWer">Samantha Chrysanthou</a>. They joined Marc and I for an afternoon of shooting followed by dinner, drinks and good times at a local tavern. They're both the sweetest people, and Darwin proved to be quite the character as I had long suspected. I can't wait to see them again someday.</div><div><br /></div><div>Before I go, remember last time how I mentioned that <a target="_blank" href="http://fineimagephotography.blogspot.com/2011/10/holding-out-for-hero.html">one of my blog posts</a> got picked up for publication? Well, it's been published on Nature Photographers Online Magazine and you can read it <a target="_blank" href="http://www.naturephotographers.net/articles0112/kl0112-1.html">RIGHT HERE</a>. </div><div><br /></div><div>Well, that about does it for this blog post and for 2011 as a whole. As always, thanks for reading. And, Happy New Year to you and yours! ^_^</div><div><br /></div><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xjgX1gweeYI/Tv-WdbZ8dSI/AAAAAAAAApg/sO5pyu2u9_U/s1600/Kory_20111208_2578MasterMaster.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 282px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xjgX1gweeYI/Tv-WdbZ8dSI/AAAAAAAAApg/sO5pyu2u9_U/s400/Kory_20111208_2578MasterMaster.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5692433886336546082" /></a><div style="text-align: center;"><b>Majestic Mount Rundle</b> (large version <a target="_blank" href="http://www.fineimagephotography.com/Fine-Art-Galleries/BEST-OF/2715689_jzC9kr#1653504444_kq4ftdF-A-LB">HERE</a>)</div><br /><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yfoVCrwF9CM/Tv-Waw2aa4I/AAAAAAAAApU/cgPJvlChLms/s1600/Kory_20111205_2390MasterBlog.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yfoVCrwF9CM/Tv-Waw2aa4I/AAAAAAAAApU/cgPJvlChLms/s400/Kory_20111205_2390MasterBlog.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5692433840553487234" /></a><div style="text-align: center;"><b>Frigid and Frosty Morning</b> (large version <a target="_blank" href="http://www.fineimagephotography.com/Fine-Art-Galleries/BEST-OF/2715689_jzC9kr#1632411444_MrwRtCM-A-LB">HERE</a>)</div><br /><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B5kpyuCk5_c/Tv-WYD8RXNI/AAAAAAAAApI/nyiWb0dzwkw/s1600/Kory_20111209_2632MasterBlog.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B5kpyuCk5_c/Tv-WYD8RXNI/AAAAAAAAApI/nyiWb0dzwkw/s400/Kory_20111209_2632MasterBlog.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5692433794138725586" /></a><div style="text-align: center;"><b>Warm and Cozy</b></div><br /><br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3GDU6ybYnX8/Tv-WU1U8d7I/AAAAAAAAAo8/NC_twASpWpA/s1600/Kory%2526Rams.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3GDU6ybYnX8/Tv-WU1U8d7I/AAAAAAAAAo8/NC_twASpWpA/s400/Kory%2526Rams.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5692433738676074418" /></a><div style="text-align: center;"><b>Hangin' With The Locals</b></div>Koryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09036588965241650185noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7555831840479173587.post-27224325910359756592011-11-30T18:33:00.035-06:002011-12-26T16:22:35.614-06:00My hero(s)!<div>Time for some positivity!</div><div><br /></div><div>After <a target="_blank" href="http://fineimagephotography.blogspot.com/2011/10/holding-out-for-hero.html">last month's somewhat depressing blog post</a>, in which I describe the trials and tribulations a landscape photographer often endures trying to get a <a target="_blank" href="http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Hero&defid=2280328">hero image</a>, I thought it would be nice to get back to normal and show you my most recent hero images. So, drop everything, clear your schedule, call all of your friends over, make some popcorn, fasten your seatbelt, and prepare to be utterly amazed. Or, you could just read on. I'll get over it someday.</div><div><br /></div><div>This first image is, ironically, from the very same trip that produced the gut-wrenching incident on the sand dunes described in last month's blog post. I created it in the <a target="_blank" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pawnee_National_Grassland">Pawnee National Grassland</a> in northeastern Colorado. </div><div><br /></div><div>Over the years, I had driven right by the Pawnee National Grassland countless times and never thought much of it. Imagine my surprise, then, when I finally decided to check it out and was completely blown away. (There's more of that "irony" stuff for you.)</div><div><br /></div><div>Even though it's called a "grassland" there is much more to it than just grass, although there is, of course, grass aplenty. Much of the area is covered with large, dramatic cliffs and buttes. Impressive vistas abound at every turn. Within 45 minutes of arrival, the great beauty and splendor of the place had me grinning from ear to ear.</div><div><br /></div><div>I made this image in a distant, little-traveled part of the grassland. The vibrant fall colors combined with the exquisite light of the setting sun made this one a no-brainer.</div><div><br /></div><div>As I began hiking back to my car in the dark, coyotes -- <i>lots</i> of coyotes -- began howling en masse. My pulse quickened and my mind began to work overtime. I started worrying a bit too much about coyotes and mountain lions fancying me for dinner. I should've been calmed by the knowledge that surely no self-respecting coyote or mountain lion could possibly have such poor taste, but I was not.</div><div><br /></div><div>All in all, I spent a half day in a place I'd never been to, without scouting it ahead of time, and came away with a hero image. To top it off, it was only about an hour away from my base of operations in Fort Collins, Colorado. It turned out to be far and away the best image from my <i>entire</i> trip to Colorado, and it took the least amount of effort. </div><div><br /></div><div>Do I even have to point out the irony there?</div><div><br /></div><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OYS0gIaMXcs/TtbL3fyHyEI/AAAAAAAAAow/h_4drzmmx6Q/s1600/Kory_20111021_1403MasterBlog.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OYS0gIaMXcs/TtbL3fyHyEI/AAAAAAAAAow/h_4drzmmx6Q/s400/Kory_20111021_1403MasterBlog.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5680952134259427394" /></a><b><div style="text-align: center;"><b>Sunset Over Coyote Country</b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal; "> (large version </span><a target="_blank" href="http://www.fineimagephotography.com/Fine-Art-Galleries/BEST-OF/2715689_jzC9kr#1570015780_P4t9fX4-A-LB" style="font-weight: normal; ">HERE</a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal; ">)</span></div></b><div><br /></div><div>This next image has a special place in my heart, which is really saying something considering how shriveled and black the thing is.</div><div><br /></div><div>The subject is obvious: it's skyline of downtown Minneapolis, the glorious city I call home. What's not so obvious is the amount of time it took me to find this particular spot.</div><div><br /></div><div>For over a decade, I looked for a spot just like this. One that overlooks the skyline, unobstructed, with cars zooming into and out of the city that I could use to make long-exposure lines which would lead the eye into the frame. Eventually, I gave up. If the spot doesn't exist, it doesn't exist.</div><div><br /></div><div>Then, about six weeks ago, I found it.</div><div><br /></div><div>I was elated beyond words. The second I saw it, I just <i>knew</i> it was the spot I had been looking for. All that was left was to wait for a day with a good sunset, then get there and make it happen.</div><div><br /></div><div>On November 4th, that day came.</div><div><br /></div><div>With the sunset looking promising, I fought rush hour traffic and made it to the spot just in time. I set up my tripod, composed my shot and readied myself. I knew the shot was going to be a knockout as long as the clouds cooperated and lit up with sunset color.</div><div><br /></div><div>When the moment arrived, I started tripping the shutter... and got what I wanted within five minutes. I couldn't believe it: after a decade of searching, I had the shot! Even after finding the spot, I never dreamed things would happen so fast and that, a scant two weeks later, I would have the image of Minneapolis that I always dreamed of making. Damn, more irony!</div><div><br /></div><div>So, I suppose you'd like to know exactly where that spot is. No problem, get something to write with. You ready? Here goes: it's at the corner of "Get A Map" and "F*ck Off". (Sorry, but whenever the chance presents itself I just <i>have</i> to quote lines from <i><a target="_blank"href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hangover">The Hangover</a></i>.) </div><div><br /></div><div>Seriously, though, you didn't think I was actually going to tell you, did you? Maybe in another ten years...</div><div><br /></div><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LBr_TroVQSM/TtbLwBG_4YI/AAAAAAAAAok/2Kx1hegwCsU/s1600/Kory_20111104_1674MasterBlog.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LBr_TroVQSM/TtbLwBG_4YI/AAAAAAAAAok/2Kx1hegwCsU/s400/Kory_20111104_1674MasterBlog.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5680952005766406530" /></a><div style="text-align: center;"><b>Bustling Metropolis</b> (large version <a target="_blank"href="http://www.fineimagephotography.com/Fine-Art-Galleries/Cityscapes/15869106_Kwh6Hx#1570014400_jRg5q93-A-LB">HERE</a>)</div><div><br /></div><div>Before I go, you may like to know that the aforementioned depressing blog post from last month got picked up for publication and will appear in the December issue of <a target="_blank" href="http://www.naturephotographers.net/enter.html">Nature Photographer's Online Magazine</a>. Looks like even bad experiences can have silver linings.</div><div><br /></div><div>Lastly, I leave on Saturday for a week in <a target="_blank" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banff_National_Park">Banff National Park</a> in the Canadian Rockies. My friend and master landscape photographer <a target="_blank"href="http://www.marcadamus.com/">Marc Adamus</a> will be joining me. Shooting in the field with him is always rewarding, so I am quite excited! I should have the images from the trip ready within a month.</div><div><br /></div><div>That's all for now. The ones that really stand out. The true keepers.</div><div><br /></div><div>So, by entitling this blog post "Holding Out For A Hero", I'm not referring that that cheesy song from <i>Footloose</i>. I'm talking about the extreme lengths photographers -- especially landscape and nature photographers -- go to make an image that they're truly happy with. A hero image.</div><div><br /></div><div>Ansel Adams, the most famous landscape photographer in history, once famously quipped, "Twelve significant photographs in any one year is a good crop". Think about tremendous, crushing the weight of that statement. Here is a man who took <i>tens of thousands</i> of pictures a year and only figured he made a hero image once a month at best!</div><div><br /></div><div>Why is it so tough, then, for landscape and nature photographers to get hero images? Because we have literally no control over the most important aspect of photography: the light. Which really is to say the weather, because the weather is what controls the light.</div><div><br /></div><div>Case in point: two weeks ago, I returned to <a target="_blank" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Sand_Dunes_National_Park_and_Preserve">Great Sand Dunes National Park</a> determined to get the image that eluded me on my <a target="_blank" href="http://fineimagephotography.blogspot.com/2011/09/making-chicken-salad-out-of-chicken-sht.html">previous trip</a> earlier this summer. Upon arrival, I was disappointed to see that once again the sky was completely cloudless and therefore boring for photography purposes.</div><div><br /></div><div>The weather reports said that clouds would be rolling in later in the week, so I figured I'd scout locations for the next several days in preparation for the dynamic weather to come. I made the grueling 3.5-mile hike to Star Dune, the most massive and tallest dune in North America. Once atop, I cracked a smile as I found a very compelling composition that would work perfectly later in the week.</div><div><br /></div><div>Three long days later, with the clouds appearing on schedule, I labored to the top of Star Dune again, this time with a 40-pound pack in much colder, semi-rainy weather. It was one of the more tiring hikes I've ever done.</div><div><br /></div><div>But, it was all going to be worth it! I just knew how it would play out: once the sun started to set, its golden, late-day light would illuminate the dunes and clouds in a breathtaking display that would make grown men weep. All my hard work and days of waiting would pay off in spades.</div><div><br /></div><div>The sky was thick with dynamic clouds as desired, but, thankfully, right above western horizon there was a horizontal sliver of clear sky -- just enough for the sun to poke through for a few precious minutes before it set. That would be all I needed. I was in position and ready to rock. Bring it on!!</div><div><br /></div><div>As the moment of truth neared, electric nervousness coursed through me -- I had so much riding on the success of this one image. Then, finally, after what seemed like forever, it happened. The sun's rays burst upon the scene like a supernova. They hit the westernmost dunes first, then slowly crawled across the rest of the dune sea. I was beyond ecstatic, literally yelling "F*CK YEAH!!" over and over. (Sorry, kids.) My face was stuck in a big perma-grin as I waited for the sunlight to light up the whole scene.</div><div><br /></div><div>Then, something caught my eye that erased my smile faster than a dead kitten.</div><div><br /></div><div>A cloud had moved in on one side of the open sliver of sky to the west. It was a small cloud -- a <i>puny</i> cloud -- but that tiny little sadistic clump of water vapor distressed me more than a loaded gun in my face. It was partially blocking the sun's rays just enough so that only part of my image was being lit up. If that evil cloud had been just a tad to the side -- literally, just a tad! -- things would've been ok. But, it was not.</div><div><br /></div><div>As I watched in horror, the few-minute window of sunlight started to ebb, and the crushing realization that my image would not be illuminated in the way I'd hoped and all my work would be for naught gripped me like a brain freeze. There would be no hero image for me that day.</div><div><br /></div><div>I stood there completely numb for several minutes in a state of disbelief and bitter disappointment. Then, I began uttering a few phrases that aren't appropriate for this blog.</div><div><br /></div><div>During the long, dark and draining hike back to my car, I tried to put it in perspective. This was nothing new. What had happened to me has happened to countless photographers over the years (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.ianplant.com/blog/2011/01/03/a-week-in-the-life/">just ask well-known photographer Ian Plant</a>), and would undoubtedly happen again. Welcome to the life of a landscape photographer! </div><div><br /></div><div>And, the fact is, <i>I did this to myself</i>. No one made me take this trip. I could've just as easily stayed home and sat in the hot tub drinking beer. Besides, I still got to be immersed in nature for a week, and that's what it's all about. At least that's what I keep telling myself. ^_^</div><div><br /></div><div>Lastly, there's always next time. And, I <i>will</i> be back. Be forewarned, dunes.</div><div><br /></div><div>Before I go, I thought you'd like to see the image that almost was. As you can see, the sunlight never got where I wanted it. Imagine if that whole scene had been lit like the dunes in the foreground! For comparison, the second image was taken just minutes later, after the partial light show ended. Close, but no cigar.</div><div><br /></div><div>Ansel Adams once said, "Landscape photography is the supreme test of the photographer -- and often the supreme disappointment".</div><div><br /></div><div>He was right.</div><div><br /></div><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vvn1Kf_-_Jo/TrBo0YlHNnI/AAAAAAAAAoY/hJXTriIe-OE/s1600/Kory_20111025_1596MasterBlog.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vvn1Kf_-_Jo/TrBo0YlHNnI/AAAAAAAAAoY/hJXTriIe-OE/s400/Kory_20111025_1596MasterBlog.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5670147180020053618" /></a><br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--HY4lMRtAgw/TrBoxhdEuwI/AAAAAAAAAoM/tAjNq2Q7VQM/s1600/Kory_20111025_1604MasterBlog.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--HY4lMRtAgw/TrBoxhdEuwI/AAAAAAAAAoM/tAjNq2Q7VQM/s400/Kory_20111025_1604MasterBlog.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5670147130862648066" /></a>Koryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09036588965241650185noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7555831840479173587.post-73299619139866387132011-09-30T18:25:00.008-05:002011-10-10T16:35:33.321-05:00Making chicken salad out of chicken sh*t.<div style="text-align: left;">Last month, I once again journeyed to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Sand_Dunes_National_Park_and_Preserve">Great Sand Dunes National Park</a> to photograph the amazing dunes. Being that the dunes roll on for almost 40 square <i>miles</i>, there were plenty of spots (read: almost all of them) that I hadn't been to. So, this time, I set out for the northeast corner, an area with not a single footprint to be found.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div>Once I finished the strenuous hike to the top, I began scouting for good compositions to use in the upcoming sunset. To my dismay, try as I might, I just couldn't find anything I liked. It was frustrating, because normally the dunes offer me something that more than tickles my fancy (like <a href="http://www.fineimagephotography.com/Fine-Art-Galleries/BEST-OF/2715689_jzC9kr#425174729_JCcCM-A-LB">this</a>, for example). This time, though... nothing. Welcome to the life of a landscape photographer: sometimes, that's just the way it goes. To make matters worse, the clouds were not cooperating at all and were completely absent from behind the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sangre_de_Cristo_Range">Sangre de Cristo</a> mountains where I wanted to make my image.</div><div><br /></div><div>But, all was not lost! With a little help from Mother Nature, I was about to make lemonade outta lemons. (Thanks, Mom!)</div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div>As the sun started to set, I noticed in the distance that a bunch of people were hanging out at the top of High Dune, which is where 90% of those who actually make it to the top of the dunes go. Even better, a bank of clouds was billowing directly above them, and it was starting to coming alive with brilliant sunset hues. Turns out the dunes had something to offer after all.</div><div><br /></div><div>Please be sure to view the <a href="http://www.fineimagephotography.com/Fine-Art-Galleries/People/2727505_cdDkGk#1505831088_dtNK7cg-A-LB">large version</a>, as it makes it easier to see the people atop High Dune. (Although admittedly they're still just dots -- a large print is really the best way to view this image. I posted a close up of the people below the image so that you can see the detail.)</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div>That's all for now. Until next time, take care. And be nice to your mom! ^_^</div><div><br /></div><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m7wac4xPO04/ToZP_pQl1dI/AAAAAAAAAn8/ELSThhvTs9s/s1600/Kory_20110809_0889MasterBlog.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m7wac4xPO04/ToZP_pQl1dI/AAAAAAAAAn8/ELSThhvTs9s/s400/Kory_20110809_0889MasterBlog.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5658297936663401938" /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: none; "></span></a><div style="text-align: center;"><b>High Atop The Dune Summit</b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><br /></b></div><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FMMIGG_XAf8/TpNjoKhMXcI/AAAAAAAAAoE/qV3JQ2YYzhc/s400/Kory_20110809_0889MasterCrop.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5661978698204339650" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 266px; " /></div>Koryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09036588965241650185noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7555831840479173587.post-63701737273277432672011-08-31T22:04:00.020-05:002011-09-09T22:19:02.335-05:00Twilight Delight<div style="text-align: left;">As promised, here is some wildflower action straight from the mountains of Colorado. That's right: I'm getting right to the point this time. (Hey! Don't act so relieved.)</div><div><br /></div><div>On day two, our campsite was in an idyllic field of wildflowers. Literally right in the middle of it! One had to be careful not to step on a flower. Just after dusk, a curious fox emerged to inspect the situation, and with him came good luck.</div><div><br /></div><div>Later that evening, I made this image. It was a perfectly still night, very silent and beautiful. Here's to you, Mr. Fox. ^_^</div><div><br /></div><div>Be sure to check out the <a href="http://www.fineimagephotography.com/Fine-Art-Galleries/BEST-OF/2715689_jzC9kr#1457912901_SMkwggb-A-LB">LARGE VERSION</a> of this one -- it really does it a <i>lot</i> more justice. </div><div><br /></div><div>As always, thanks for reading and, until next time, take care. And don't forget to stargaze at least once before summer's over!</div><div><br /></div><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YYdrguSaz10/TmrW1ms5bGI/AAAAAAAAAn0/W9ooA5bhmoI/s400/Kory_20110807_0684MasterBlog.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5650564898899979362" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px; " /><div><div style="text-align: center;"><b>"Twilight Delight"</b></div></div>Koryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09036588965241650185noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7555831840479173587.post-10763955181787798552011-07-31T23:06:00.010-05:002012-04-03T23:18:31.696-05:00Flower Power!<div>Vampires would hate me right now.<div><br /></div><div>After today's wildflower shoot, my veins are drier than a calculus lecture. There's not a drop of blood left -- my heart might as well take the rest of the night off.</div><div><br /></div><div>So, where did all my blood go? Well, it didn't exactly <i>go</i> anywhere -- it was taken. Stolen. Snatched from my body against my will! That's right, today I was blood-raped. And all I'm guilty of is trying to make some art. <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">Sheesh</span>.</div><div><br /></div><div>Of course, the perpetrator of this heinous act was none other than the Mighty Minnesota Mosquito. Him, and a few hundred of his damn friends. Yep, the Purveyors of the Prairie made quick work of me today.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>Nevertheless, I came away with a decent image. And, it's a good thing, too! I leave for the wildflower country of central Colorado in a few days and the last thing I need is a bad-luck omen. Of course, some might say that getting bitch-slapped by a bunch of murderous insects is a pretty bad sign in itself. Not me, though. I got the shot, and that's all that matters.</div><div><br /></div><div>Below is the image from today's shoot. I hope you like it -- I almost died making it, after all.</div><div><br /></div><div>Next month, I should have some new wildflower images from Colorado. They say it's a record bloom this year, so I have high hopes. Until then, take care. And don't forget your bug spray! ^_^</div><div><br /></div><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MLLiOZuyy0o/TjYsuxisg4I/AAAAAAAAAnU/dMGNI-P90bE/s1600/Kory_20110731_0534Blog.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MLLiOZuyy0o/TjYsuxisg4I/AAAAAAAAAnU/dMGNI-P90bE/s400/Kory_20110731_0534Blog.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5635741165785219970" /></a><div style="text-align: center;"><b>"Summer On The Prairie"</b></div>Koryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09036588965241650185noreply@blogger.com0
